My mom would always hound me, saying "I wish you were more like Johnny or Jessica" when I started refusing to go to meetings because I was sick of being forced to associate with the two-faced, empty-headed, self-righteous Johnnys and Jessicas. I'd always laugh. If only Mom knew the truth!

JW Youths - Living "Double Lives"
by BBOARD ini grew up around very hypocritical jw youth.
many of whom i now know at 20 were never living up to the lie they put out ... stupid me i was.
here i stand now because of it - i am sure most of you here being ex-jw's know this very familiar situation.

Do you think JWs actually care if they convert people or not?
by LouBelle inthe reason i ask this is because when i was on the field way back in the day - i really couldn't be bothered if the householder was interested or not.
if they took literature and paid for it (we asked a certain price for literature before it all became on a donation basis) it was a bonus, plus meant money for a cooldrink / tea & cake afterwards.. actually i would prefer it if they weren't interested so i could get away from the door - sometimes their ""conversation stoppers"" made too much sense and i couldn't answer back.. that meant i didn't convert anybody.
do you think most of the jws' are like that today?

Early on, I cared. I even had a study! Then, as time went on and I figured out what a rigid, unloving organization I was about to bring her in, I stopped caring. I never expressed my doubts, but I spent more time telling her what horrible hypocrites everyone in the cong. was than about the Bible.

How many have had a problem with the confession idea to elders?
by Hope4Others ini use to, well i still do think its no better than the confession idea to a priest.. 1. how many elders step down and are removed and what then?.
2. how many people have access to the file cabinet?.
3. my biggest thought is how many that are no longer elders repeat the dirty little secrets?.

I don't trust them to keep secrets while they are elders. My Mom said that she told two elders during a confidential meeting that I had run away and moved in with my worldly boyfriend. When she went to the District Convention that year, somehow, EVERYONE knew. Because I was well-liked in the congregation, it was a big shocker for everyone, so a lot of people that Mom hardly knew came up to ask if it was really true and express their condolences. I wish that she'd have gotten angry at the elders for doing the wrong thing, but nooooo, it was all MY fault.

What Was The Silliest "Offense" That You Were Counseled For?
by minimus inwhen i was a teenager, i was told by an elder that because i smiled a lot and was known for my good sense of humor, that i should come across as "more serious".
so before i was appointed a ms, while in my late teens, i transformed myself into a much more "serious" brother.. were you ever told that you needed to work on something that you knew was stoopid?.

I was counseled for "Independent Thinking" many times. During one of my last kerfluffles with the elders, I told them that their brainwashing tchniques would not work on me. They told me that brainwashing was a good thing, because "it washes the brain of all of the filth inside." Freaky thing is, when I told my Mom that the elders admitted to brainwashing, she parroted their exact words.

Ok, this is a little odd for me...just need a little advice
by A-Team in...there is a young lady at my workplace, who is a jw, and is sending the obvious signs that she at least has interest in me...even know that i will be a minister 'of the devil's church', as jws call it, as of june.
i'm not going to lie, i think she's cute, and if she wants to talk, i would do it.
one of my major questions is this: if i am not a jw, why would she have any intrest in a person that is apart of 'satan's system'?

I agree with R. Crusoe here!! When I met my fiance, I was still a faithful dubbie, but I guess I realized that I loved my English heathen more than their Jehovah. And why wouldn't I prefer a kind, intelligent, thoughtful man over a spoiled selfish egomaniac who threatens to smite me over trifles but ultimately does nothing?

Where do you send your DA letter?
by Rosie Angel inwhen i decided to leave the cult back in 2003, i didn't "fade," per se.
i just ran away screaming, moved in with my non-believing boyfriend who lived out-of-state, and didn't leave a forwarding address.
mwahaha.

Thanks for your advice! I'm starting to doubt whether it's worth the trouble. Of all of the culties, I was only really in contact with my Mom after I left, and, although I was popular with the little old ladies in the congregation (the only worthwhile people there, IMHO), they're probably all dead now, anyways. Misanthropic - that was a really beautiful DA letter. :) Did anyone who was doubting contact you?

I just ran away screaming, moved in with my non-believing boyfriend who lived out-of-state, and didn't leave a forwarding address. Mwahaha. >:) Since I left, I've had a joyful life with real friends, and, because I wasn't technically disfellowshipped, my Mom was in contact with me. But of course, I couldn't have my cake and eat it too. Mom figured out that I wasn't coming back to the cult and has since stopped talking to me. So now that there's nothing more keeping me from writing a DA letter, I want to get some closure. Where do I send it to make sure it's official? Can I send it from my non-believing father's mailbox with his return address in Oregon so the culties don't come after me?

Ex-Witness English tutor encounters a current Witness tutee...
by Rosie Angel ini've been tutoring this nice esl lady named patrice for awhile now.
i knew she was a witness, since i saw her studying out of the revelation book, so i kept my guard up around her.
somehow, though, i recognized an uncited passage from the nwt ecclesiastes in a paper, and i mentioned that she really needed to cite passages from the bible, just like any other book, so she used the odd witness citation.

Thank you so much for your advice, everyone! :) I'll try the simple "Thank you for your concern, Patrice, but I've looked into your religion already, and I'm not interested in studying it anymore." approach for now, especially considering that the chance of discovery is very, very, slim: my mother, the only Witness in my family, lives several states away has been lying about my status and covering my tracks so we can still have a relationship, even if it's a shaky one. If that tactic doesn't work and she keeps hounding me, I will definitely take the rest of your advice to talk to my employer! I also have another campus job that pays better than this one, so worst case, I'll just leave and focus my energy on the other one. But it would be such a shame to have to do that...

Soooo ... they've been spying on us!
by bluesapphire inmy husband and i visited with an old friend who is about to be disfellowshipped and guess what he told us:.
car groups regularly drive by our house to check it out.
an elder said he saw ... gasp ... a christmas tree this past christmas (which he had to have snuck a look through a side window because our front windows always have the shutters closed!.

Yeah, it's weird. When I ran away to California to escape df'ing, the brothers found out which tiny town it was, and people were knocking on my door every few days until they failed to find me. (Boyfriend kept coming to the door, and he was never a Witness, so... yeah, it worked. He just told them that coming by every few days was harassment, and slammed the door repeatedly). Seriously, I'm amazed that I belonged to a group filled with such small, narrow people throughout my childhood.

I've been tutoring this nice ESL lady named Patrice for awhile now. I pulled out my MLA Handbook and showed her how to correctly cite Scripture in academic papers, and she asked me how I recognized it, and... I lied and told her that I learned about the Bible in church. When she mentioned that HER Bible was special and only someone who was a Witness would recognize it, I told her that my Mother was a Witness but I was the same religion as my Dad. I didn't want to mention that I was disassociated, because I am the only ESL tutor who has gotten anywhere with her. Now, she's preaching to me constantly. I try to change the subject, but when she claims that THE BIBLE SAYS that all religions except hers are "Babylon the Great" and it's obviously her religion's groundless interpretation of scripture, I want to pull out her Bible and criticize her reading comprehension skills with cold, hard, cruel logic, though it could get me fired. It just makes my blood boil! How would you recommend helping me handle this awkward situation? I really, really want to teach this woman how to write English well, but I don't take kindly to attempts to reprogram me.
